As 2014 progresses, there are also the many games that will travel along with it with various DLCs, expansion packs and standalone games to offer for players new and old. However I have only written a few blogs like this one where I talk about my selection of games and many of the games I was hoping to buy last year did take place. Mission accomplished! However, there are many I still have yet to buy and since next gen consoles aren't really on my list, the next few years will be involving playing catchup on all the games I've been waiting to buy or at least get for a Christmas present AKA for free.
Although like last year, a lot of the games which I wish to buy have changed to different video games an I'm only excluded to one console, the PS3 since I'm unlikely to buy any new next gen consoles anytime soon. This may be the case for many of you too but there are a few games which I have been waiting to buy for over a year. Most of them aren't the usual and traditional set of Assassin's Creed games... which is a big difference for me. So out of no particular order, here's a few of the games I'm waiting for in the upcoming months and maybe you'll see some familiar ones too. As the drums roll, we start with...
Wolfenstein: The New Order
Taking place in an alternate history where the Nazis won World War 2, the entire planet has changed aside from a few proportions of the world where there are small groups of people who begin to rally up against the opposing army. With areas like London being overtaken, it will be up to the few remaining survivors of the attack including Blazkovicz who is has remained in asylum for about 14 years and awakens to a world full of robotic armies, mechanical dogs and of course, some neat weapons which pretty much take over the game.
Of course, the game will be subject to interpretation considering that the Nazis would have simply collapsed after Hitler although not saying that he's not in the game but the entire series has always been with World War 2 mixed with something crazy so since this game just furthers that aspect, the amount of people who might dislike the game could be minimal. Plus at the fact that there are so few games that currently take place in World War 2 and even less take place during alternate events in history so it will be interesting to see how this will play out. However aside from the craziness, there will be more emphasis on the story so scenes of humour will probably be limited compared to the emotional aspect but from the looks of the gameplay, it seems that players will get the best of both worlds.
Before you watch the video, it contains scenes of blood so if you belch of the sight of it, the video, might not be for you.
The gameplay and storyline already make me think of the Resistance series especially since they're pretty much raising a resistance in the game although in some ways, it makes me think whether this might be compared to the Resistance franchise. The weapons, story and graphics all seem like a Resistance game and I wonder if the Chimera will show up as a cameo or some plot twist. Then again, I do think there will be some mythology with a sense of mystery of the invasion, the connection the main character and possibly a link to the previous games, Although this will remain a single player game so those who believe it's another substitute to Call of Duty, they may be a tad disappointed at the lack of multiplayer.
There is also a lot to what we haven't seen and it would be fun if the game takes to the stars and the developers look like they are trying to create more of a sense of what the world would be like if the Nazis won World War 2 which is why players will see radical and often strange depictions of cities redeveloped with their own vision Overall, this is a game that I'm mostly interested in due to the return of the early to mid 1900s in a different way with most of my experience of World War 2 games existing mostly within the early Medal of Honor games and hopefully this may drive more games to revise the setting since a few installments in recent times such as Call of Duty: World at War and The Saboteur or even look further back. I mean, a game set on a first person perspective during the American Revolutionary or the Crimean wars could make for an interesting set of games or even just a first person game set even before guns were developed.
There is also at he fact that World War 2 era continues to fascinate many people around the world so if you're looking for a history lesson mixed in with almost complete fiction, then this is the game for you and maybe you would want to look at the early series?
The game is set for release in May 20th for North America and about May 23rd for pretty much everywhere else just after I've eaten all my birthday cake so I'll have finished fattening myself up for hibernation, well preparing to play this game.
The next game is possibly something many of you will probably be scratching your heads wondering what the game is and also, why I'm considering of buying it.
Drakengard 3
Born in the development studios of Japan, Drakengard is a series very much like Final Fantasy where the setting is a mystical world, full of the most bizarre characters you may ever meet from a Japanese video game (that becomes accessible to other countries of course) but with many significant differences. Foremost, it's a game based on hack and slash and more based on developing abilities and from the name Drakengard, it can also refer to riding out with aerial combat with playable Dragons similar to flight I guess from Ni No Kuni but I suppose with more action! Taking place as a prequel to the original game, chaos is brought about in the land where 5 godesses secured peace to the world via singing so hopefully it was some really good music. However the main character Zero, has bow decided to kill her 5 sisters with the help of her Dragon, Mikhail, it certainly looks like an interesting storyline and what I love about the announcement of the game, is that it appears to have a lot of lore behind it's intriguing story.
Zero being one of the women who can use magic to which she can easily level up by (you know the drill) defeating enemies. She is cold and doesn't hate to enact violence which probably explains why the game is about an 18+ however Mikhail on the other hand is slightly opposite where he is often child like, friendly and gets upset when he is yelled at. Mostly by Zero and it's still unconfirmed whether this makes him cry a flood or breath out a fireball. Both are equally awesome. However, it's the friendship that will most likely become a highlight for the game and whether their personalities may alter as a result of it. So overall aside from the Dragon, everything seems to be non-cutsie and in fact kind of darker compared to the original series... which technically doesn't make any sense.
I am not a well known member of Japanese games. I have played my fair share of games including Metal Gear Solid and perhaps even fewer Japanese role playing games mostly consisting of Pokemon and Final Fantasy IX. When I look back at the games I have, a lot of them are all over the place. I used to believe that I only enjoyed action-adventure games with a lot of my child upbringing being based on series including Ratchet and Clank as well as the fact that I love open world games due to the amount of freedom but the truth is, I don't have a specific group of games that I admire over the other. I've always had a variety of different games from mainstream to lesser known and single player to multiplayer based. With Drakengard 3, I want to reinforce this and try out games that I've perhaps never even heard of and maybe many of you wouldn't recognise either. In doing so, many of you may be wondering what the game's like so that I could easily write up a few blogs about it... well after about a few months when I get round to them.
So overall, I'm not familiar with the Drakengard series and I only really found it during my adventures across the internet where I stumbled across a list of upcoming games by Square Enix and Drakengard seemed the appealing to me. There are some games like Final Fantasy XIII: Lightning Returns which seem interesting for new players but after playing the demo, the environment is more of something I would enjoy most rather than the story and the gameplay so I will wait for the new series on the eighth generation consoles. That is if I decide to buy the games as I fear that the series has gone too far away from it's routes whereas Drakengard 3 is still getting positive feedback from players in Japan and even if though on the international scale, we have to wait a few more months, I think the wait might be worth it. Especially with the new DLC available to which you are able to play as all the sisters within the game. Also can be seen as the targets of the main character in the game so you can see there is an assassination format of one of the games I want and many of you won't be surprised.
For thew lucky ones who reside in Japan, the game has already within the release status where much of the fanbase is established but for people across the world eagerly awaiting for this game, it's release is around the same time of Wolfenstein: The New Order which again is something for my birthday money to do the talking.
Aside from games that the mainstream audience have probably never heard of until their upcoming releases, there is one game in particular which has really been on one of my top most of anticipated gaming lists for many years. Many of you may have already have been victim to it's purchase and now hold a very powerful weapon. It can only be known as...
South Park: The Stick of Truth
After about 2 years of waiting, it has finally arrived and in good condition. During the THQ bankruptcy and extended release date, it made many fans left worried whether the game would ever release or simply fail to come in to existence. However this isn't just one of the few games that didn't head down this route, it is also one of the few products as many consoles have been cancelled due to the mere issue of extended release dates.
I wasn't really a fan of South Park until about 4 years ago and I've remained a fan ever since. The Simpsons will always remain on top for my perspective and I will always prefer to see a brand new Simpsons: Hit and Run game but the new South Park game was enough to become one of most anticipated games of 2013 and I was really hoping to play the game at Christmas. A gift from Santa Claus himself as shown from a few of the TV seasons. With the game delayed, I was forced to buy Call of Duty: Ghosts! Now, don't worry. There are many reasons as to why I bought that game but my hope for the next South Park game continued like many after the horrific sounds of a delay... by 3 months!
March on the other hand has always been a great time of the year and South Park is the one of the reasons for this. A game really for many fans of the TV series who can customise their very own South Park characters, explore the world just like a really long episode AKA a movie and finally make choices that will determine the fate of the New Kid's reputation. Move over Mass Effect! There is a new RPG in town. Even if you aren't familiar with the series, it could be a great way to start by checking it out but be warned. The next video will give a terrifying reference to ManBearPig from a super cereal guy... at 9:25.
So give the gameplay, it is a turn based RPG which for many players, isn't a genre many people are willing to play but with all the craziness of South Park, it seems like it matches the 2D style of the game with several reasons as to why some of the characters can't participate in boss battles which we have all been waiting for. Although it makes me wonder that if it wasn't for the South Park name, this game probably wouldn't sell very well as the developers of Obsidian Entertainment are relying on a few kickstarters for their upcoming games and many of which are being driven on the PC format so I think this game could be potentially useful to promote their sales.
For many of you however, this game may seem absolutely absurd which is understandable since the series is pretty much based on offensive language and whatnot towards pretty much everyone so it's really chaotic and no doubt it will get even more crazy as the game progresses and even if a few of the scenes are censored, I doubt it will hinder much for the game although it's a mystery how the TV series don't have to censor anything. On the plus note, at least it has Gingers finally becoming a role within a video game. Many people say that women and different ethnicities are not utilised within gaming in a sufficient manner but at least they have games that don't discriminate against them and Gingers are one of the many who aren't not just recognised but not even included within video games. Okay, they may be one of the villains of the game but hopefully we'll see more games featuring them aside from their Ninja costumes. Although more of that in another blog one day.
In conclusion, unlike the two previous games I have listed, this is one of the games that have already been released and so I will likely get it around my birthday along with the other two games. Who ever said Christmas doesn't come early? Then again, if you consider DLCs or standalone titles, then there is another addition to this list which has already passed it's deadline without any delays! The final game to this list is...
Assassin's Creed: Freedom Cry
Looking past the movie of 12 Years of Slavery, this game has a similar tone to the era of African slavery and discrimination. Acting as a spin-off to the main game of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, you control the next in line or Eddie's shipmate by the name of Adewale, 14 years after the main game who takes to the high seas in his very own game within a brand new location to the series of Port au Prince in Haiti. The best thing about this installment is that just like Far Cry: Blood Dragon, the main game is not required. At least not for Xbox which seems strange as more DLC uploaded on to the disk could be problematic for the Xbox 360 but aside from the amount of how much extra Sony pays towards Ubisoft, it does look like an interesting DLC whilst I do not have huge expectations, I missed out on AC4 as it wasn't really within my interest of purchase due to many reasons. The fact that it didn't seem like an Assassin's Creed game. The fact that most of the movements would seem to similar to the previous game but the most important would be that I didn't think it would be the last we would see from the Assassin's of the Caribbean or at least, the Caribbean.
Shortly after the naval battles were shown from AC3 gameplay, Ubisoft stated that it was originally meant to be the basis of a full game. Whether this was AC4 or the setting for AC3 remains a mystery but I think that it might have been a brand new franchise in the works just like Watch Dogs but maybe the worries of den defense hindered them from taking this further too quickly. Even in the survey, they asked whether people wanted a brand new series involving naval gameplay and many agreed so it's very possible we haven't seen the last of it. That way, the AC series can move on away from naval combat and focus on lifestyles, history and good old crazy twists rather than whether we can pilot without any form of experience.
I don't like where the series is going so far. The concept of 2012 makes me think that the series in chronological terms should have ended with AC3 and become more in depth with prequels to generate brand new series. Maybe something like the Star Wars Expanded Universe. Even though I did enjoy the ending of AC3, it seems to be heading down a route further away from something interesting. Without adding spoilers but if everyone became like a slave in AC4 in the modern day, would that allow the Assassins and Templars to work together and thus the gameplay of the current times would be altered to suit perhaps half the game with an end of the world kind of theme.
Nor did I like the fact that Ubisoft decided to release their new game in less than a year but I do think that there should have been at least a small game or form of DLC in 2013 and to me, that should have been something similar to AC: Freedom Cry. Whilst I know I would thoroughly enjoy AC4 with all the exploration and pressing a few buttons to create a cool wave of random cinematics out of nowhere (the gameplay), the fact that a Pirate series is being considered put me off the most but I know Freedom Cry will be able to help me enjoy some exploration of the high seas. Will this be my AC game of all time? Who knows and I have yet to write many Assassin's Creed blogs so remember to stay tuned!
So aside from wanting every single game out there, these are some of the few that are at the top of my list.
Enough about me! Is your list similar to mine? Do you already have some of these games? Are you thinking of buying some next gen games? Will you make any choices until after E3 2014? Will you buy any games this?
If you have something to say, please don't hesitate to write in the comment section below!
Thanks for reading! Hope you enjoyed.
