Hey MyIGNers! Today, I've decided to write yet another short blog so it's easier to read and also due to the fact that I will be a bit busy on the last week of school until Christmas where we celebrate Jesus's birth in the middle of the desert (I like to think it's that way... plus The Simpsons portrayed the scene as so) and if you're not interested in that kind of thing, then there is something very special for you still... free games! Remember, Santa's still delivering his presents and whatnot.
However, my blog turned out to be a bit too big... again!
For many of you, even brand new console systems but speaking in terms of console wise, there's not a great deal of gaming consoles as there used to be. I mean, there was the whole bunch especially during the sixth generation where we got a huge variety of exclusives from consoles that could distinguish an individual's preference including the PlayStation 2 and GameCube... until the Xbox arrived. Now I'm not saying that we should blame the Xbox entirely but it's clear to see that the 3 giants, Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo prevented further development of other consoles during the Purge. However the tables have turned in an epic twist and now the 3 of the companies are struggling to hold their own against the Mobile and Tablet markets which have produced games for people who might believe that the Xbox is a type of Microwave Oven and in some respects, it is but they have prevailed through a long cycle of ways to encourage consumers to keep buying their consoles and services they offer... I'm referring to DLCs and all.
Although, this is a significant point in time as the gaming market has no longer been secluded towards the biggest brains in Computer Science who could easily be portrayed as a superhero or villain in a comic book but now it's available to many people all over the world. There's just one problem. It's extremely competitive but that hasn't stopped indie companies from sprouting and establishing their own presence in the market. So much so that there has even been the introduction of brand new consoles known as the Android Based Consoles. To put it in other words, they are consoles that are specialized in Android games and just basically... new games. Many of which are free on the Ouya and there are many others of these devices that will inevitably come in to being including the M.O.J.O by the well known developer of gaming keyboards and all those mics that people tend to scream through now and again.
Don't worry! I won't talk about the Microconsoles that much because otherwise this blog will turn out to become a similar size as my comments on other blogs but I brang up the topic because it's creating the availability of such devices. Even though they are mostly quick and easy gaming consoles to develop as compared to the mega structures, it gives the gaming industry hope that many consoles can make their mark. I love the fact that these gaming consoles are popular in their own way but I don't believe it's really a great path especially for big companies to take notice of the market such as Amazon and Apple which seems confusing since they have the potential to organize their own place amongst the big 3 with new developers and exclusives rather than designing consoles that will likely have little to no difference with barely any exclusives and only being variable in terms of touchscreen or apps.
So what if there was enough hope to bring to action new main consoles? Ones of which that could supply both mainstream and indie games that the big 3 currently do. We really don't know where the gaming industry will go next. Maybe by the time the Playstation 6 or Xbox 0.25 arrives, there will be games solely based on digital influences but what is clear that a majority of gamers don't want huge changes which is why people are worried about the Xbox One and virtual reality devices so there won't be a huge change towards certain devices anytime soon and if there was, there would be support for existing consoles and most likely be another market of interest.
I have a few consoles in mind which I would love to see in the future. Many console series will still exist. Many have yet to be considered. So lets start of this blog with...
DreamCast 2
Many of the Sega fans and just gamers in particular may remember the original DreamCast developed by Sega. Many of it's games were considered as being innovative and one of the most creative events in video game history with video games such as Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio. However like consoles before, it lasted only a short span of time, especially when considering the PlayStation 2 took over much of the market at the time and discouraged Sega from taking part in any further console development with the company being reduced to delivering mostly multiplatform games or those specialized in the Nintendo platforms with much of it's prominent games being that of the mascot which built up the company many decades ago. Sonic. It sounds like a sad story and to a great extent, it must have felt like the end of a sad movie or just realizing that they bought a movie that didn't turn out to improve. Not that I'm associating lack of improvement with the Dreamcast but just to bring up the topic, the PS2 generated a swift move towards many more innovative games. Sadness was born but that's not to say that the whole fanbase switched off. Far from it and it's no doubt how the distribution was still continued until 2010. 8 years after it plummeted. So much fan support, that it's even created fan trailer... again a fan made trailer. Unfortunately it's not true.
Even I thought that vid warmed my emotions and I never even played the console and it seems like a time more than ever to t least consider the console. The original partly relied on advertising as well did the PS2. Now what's to stop the console from failing again? Well, for starters, we have television, the internet, boards that can easily supply a certain amount of advertising so even if the next PlayStation and Xbox does manage to overrun the market, it won't be a huge deal because at least somewhere, someone will know about it especially if the trailers look more creative and unique which wouldn't be hard. Many gamers want more unique perspectives and even when certain games go pass the walls for creativity, many just don't consider that enough.
It would be awesome to play on the sequel console with a whole bunch of games I've heard about especially the ones from this TV programme which hosted all these neat games and were played while people just watched them. I'm not sure what that show was called but it featured a stairway. If that's evidence enough and you know what the show is, I'd be very appreciated to know.
On to the next console...
Nintendo GameCube 2
Nintendo has come a long way over the years. It was once the dominating company of the console market for about 3 decades straight. However when they decided to change their minds about choosing Philips to help them with their console rather than Sony, it sparked a feud of vengeance, thus creating the plans for the PlayStation... so basically Nintendo is the purpose for the console we see still taking over our Televisions!
Anyways, the introduction of the Nintendo Wii grabbed the attention of pretty much everyone who wanted to keep fit without paying the ridiculous amounts of cash for a few exercises... as well as Mario but the sales soon fell short when both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 were able to utilize the existing technological methods at the time which broadened out their expansion for many other big companies who were willing to take part. Then came along the 3DS which has gradually sped up in the market system with even mainstream gamers taking a shine to the console although considering that the advertising is unable to influence the shooter fans, it's still maintained it's own audience which isn't entirely a bad thing. However, the Wii U has become more of a rivalry console towards the PS Vita and both haven't been doing so well despite the awesome graphics and capabilities which Nintendo has recognized with the increasing demand for tablets, Nintendo have devised their own device already in development.
Now, say if Nintendo earned some of the patents of the Blu-Ray disk or better yet, made an engine superior to Blu-Ray, they would get a flood of consumers especially if it had it's own fair share of mainstream gamers, with some indie games and great deals on offer. What would would be able to get them more support would be the backwards compatibility as well as the range of exclusives they could advertise. I mean, "PS4 is for the Players"? It has no games and Nintendo could easily rub it in for both Sony's and Microsoft's faces! Just imagine it. "We have backwards compatibility unlike the PS4 which is taking your money with the Gaikei service."
This is where the Nintendo GameCube 2 can come in to play. It's really what gave Nintendo the opportunity to thrive whilst the PS2 arrived in to action with the Xbox and it's fair to say that Nintendo had a bigger pass of moving on to the next gen at the time, more so than Xbox since there was a wide variety of games and exclusives on offer where as Xbox mostly improved the shooting genre we see today. If Nintendo didn't head down motion control, we may have seen a different side to Xbox. Maybe it would be in the position Nintendo is now with arcady shooters or even kicked out of the competition completely with a new Sega console. Maybe Nintendo could buy a few of the old PS1 games like Croc or even Spyro? Well if he won't be used in Skylanders any longer. It's what Sony did to stay on top. They bought a whole bunch of shares of Xbox exclusives and it's what many people would love to see for the time being... especially me. Maybe this is Nintendo's plan all along? Make the most powerful technology to win the war... forever!
There is another reason I would like to see the console arrive back. I used to play it at my uncle's who basically had a library of the games at the time. Now, of course this wasn't as much as the DVDs we have now but I can remember playing so many of their games which seemed so rad and relatable in a fun side and I could imagine it's own Star Wars and James Bond games to become exclusives. There was a 007 exclusive for the Nintendo 64 afterall.
Now to a console that many of you may still believe it exists. Some of you may think I'm speaking gibberish.
Atari
The company that published games such as Driver that would become widely known to the gaming industry and it did create it's very own console known as the Atari 2600 which featured many classic games like Pitfall! However it quickly spiraled out of control and created a significant moment in video gaming history. The video game recession. So it doesn't really have the best reputation and could have actually destroyed video gaming for good. Okay, I suppose the whole world probably remembers them on that moment but in a way, I think they could have done well for themselves if they did well. Say if they obtained a sufficient amount of finance, we would probably see franchise like the Driver license (Get it?) under Atari.
The co-founder of the company however has stated that there would have been a new console if there were improved conditions within the Atari structure itself. Much so to battle off the PlayStation and Xbox. You may not take him seriously and in a way, I wouldn't really blame you since he's written negatively about Nintendo's plans for the Wii U where you can easily turn the tables and say, And... How far behind is your company again? Plus at the fact that he believed shooters were the prominent element of securing dominance in the market but what he says does have some truth. Atari and Nintendo in the 1970s were pretty big. I'm not referring to globally big since even video gaming didn't reach that far but say if this recession didn't happen, maybe it could have survived. Maybe we wouldn't even see Sony and Microsoft in the tables? I mean, if a widely sold console was made in the 1980s, it would have altered Nintendo's plans and thus Sony may not have had the encouragement to join the console war and maybe so too perhaps with Microsoft. Microsoft was just a baby in those days against giants controlling the market. Maybe to replace them could have been... McDonalds?
Plus, he's lived during an era where a majority of gamers have just dived in to more simplistic games including shooters and quickly formatted games that don't necessarily have a unique gameplay or story element to limit gamers who don't understand most of the techniques.
I've played many demos of their recent games such as Dungeons and Dragons: Daggerdale and what I saw wasn't great but most likely, they wouldn't get much attention from most gamers anyway and they don't exactly have the best technology plus the best reviewers. It's just weird to see that a bankrupt company that is finding it difficulty to find it's place in gaming... could have been the beginning of an amazing era especially since I could imagine Driver at the head of the exclusives... if it existed.
Ubisoft
I'm being serious. I mean there are distinct gaming giants (Not literally) including EA and Ubisoft taking the gaming universe by storm... if storm being the destructive rage from fans yelling at how their games have ruined due to the rushing of certain franchises while focusing less on the more creative titles is what you see, then that's very true too. In particular, both Ubisoft and EA have controlled a wide spread of the gaming industry as well as many others and it's clear to see that they are offering subscriptions in order to get some free DLC when it arrives... or we could probably just pay the same price later on. Okay, a few pennies more.
However there is a distinct difference between EA and Ubisoft and the most significant factor of this borderline would be the remains of creativity within Ubisoft. Many of you would disagree but with Assassin's Creed, we've seen a lot of things occur that we probably would never find in the gaming medium. I mean, I always wanted a game with waterspouts and sharks... and we got one. Not that I'll be buying Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag or Far Cry 3.
Ubisoft despite having a bit of a bad reputation of following EA's moves, it's clear that they have considered public support more than many other games and this isn't just through just the normal propaganda methods of the internet but via questionnaires that question what people really want from the game. Although of course, there are so boundaries that they will not cross in terms of creativity such as the possibility of Assassin's Creed being set during World War 2 which in my opinion, doesn't make it the perfect company in the world but at least they are sticking more to their routes whilst looking through other areas of enhancing the franchise. It was never meant to be a difficult series in most cases and just maintained that edge of awesome skillfulness just by pressing a single button or two.
Now, why a console? There's been huge announcements such as Valve's Steam Box which may come equipped with it's own exclusives and they don't even design games on a regular basis and are most commonly known by their Steam system. They may get a high profit from this method and many argue that the Steam Box isn't even a true console. Well in the way we know. So why couldn't Ubisoft design their own console, making a majority of their games, exclusives and could then focus on the small franchises they have in the ancient dusty shelves. Take a look at Driver: San Francisco. It didn't have the most perfect story in the world but it wasn't meant to and did create a huge variety of gameplay mechanics. Do 19 multiplayer modes interest you? Imagine innovative games like that and imagine that leading the driving/racing games of the system. It would practically have to be sold and promoted everywhere it possibly can.
Even though Waterspouts are pretty weak when originating over sea.
Although, it probably isn't the best option. Ubisoft have lately been susceptible to the latest delays of their most demanded games Watch Dogs and The Crew generating a plummet in their stock. Plus at the fact if we look more to a realistic point. Many gamers may buy the console for sure since on my PSN friends list, it's mostly something to do with a Ubisoft game or Deus Ex... or Dragon's Dogma... but it's easy to say that companies including Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo wouldn't give up without a fight and 3 on 1 doesn't always have the best consequences on that one... unless it's someone like Wolverine of course.
It's really how the gaming industry is at the moment. There are many risks that most companies just won't take but making a console would probably just destroy the whole company which really goes for any company. Thought it's more likely to hinder those with less involvements in other markets like where Sony has TVs and Microsoft have Windows and it's already starting to peak due to the Assassin's Creed franchise. Take for example other games they own like standalone, there's not much there and despite some interesting new ideas like Osiris, I doubt we'll see games like that anytime soon.
Now this is the final one on my list and I think that you'll find it a bit interesting.
MyIGN Console
A console built by MyIGNers, for MyIGNers. Well mostly with the involvement of mikeerik who has continued to produce games for the system... you know, theoretically if it existed in the physical presence. To say the up most detail of this console would be extensive, enough for another blog but as a short note, it will aim to change gaming, not necessarily for the console itself but for a wider basis. With the additions of new creative and innovative ideas of the community, it will help to bring many people as it possibly can outside of the MyIGN community with the increasing influence to establish it's place among the gaming market. It will aim to give everyone a chance in the gaming world as well as close connections with developers themselves.
It will recognise the needs of mainstream games to bring forward many mainstream gamers to add to the system but it's priority will be to be a basis and a welcome home area for indie games, games that are less well known and a friendship with Nintendo whilst at the same time, it will be designing exclusives to distinguish it's own set of universes which will be shown by the skins for the console which would become available with the console to distinguish your playing style or genre. For example, like shooters, why not try this skin and maybe even by the time this could become a reality, it could be holographic. However to say that it wouldn't be without series we see right now would be wrong as it would enable the expansion of existing franchises to spread a simple message that every franchise has potential. However that's all I will say for now since it will pretty much be in blog size detail so since many of you maybe falling asleep, I will leave that for another time.
So what are the consoles that you would like to see in the future? Any of the above or a completely new one. Another Magnavox Odyssey that pin pointed the very beginning of the video game console market or even something wacky and in to the unknown... like The Simpsons console.
Thanks for reading! Hope you enjoyed.
