Hey folks! It's been a while since I've written a blog. Almost a whole week and the reason is very clear. The Christmas holidays has kept me fairly busy with gaming, reading, the usual... and of course the internet was down for me at the time so I was unable to post a celebration blog but you can be sure that I'll post a fun blog when New Year's arrives... unless of course the internet tries to play further pranks on me.
So what will this blog be about? Well as the title suggests, there is no mikeerik 2013 favourite game list but instead a blog about the many fictional characters I would live to see make an epic return some time in the near future. Whether likely or nearby impossible, sometimes characters will make a return no matter what happened to themselves in the previous installments which could be the result of a new form or just the fact that their fate didn't haven't anything to do with a scenario which would throw the character out of the window.
I understand this is what many developers can do but this is most commonly found in comic books especially within the Superhero genre since characters involved in those franchises seem to be immortal or just reappear in the most unlikely situation which just goes to show that the creators can pretty much do anything with their series although how that's reacted by the audience depends how well this is carried out. However my personal experience was in Jak 3. The finale of the Jak and Daxter story aside from the racing and Ottsel games carried on a villain that seemed in a sense, insignificant in the previous storyline but became one of the most powerful characters in the entire series. All he would have to do was flick a switch and he could destroy the world or get all the sweets and chocolate he wanted. Now I won't say who this villain was in particular since I don't want to spoil it but it just made me think that perhaps any character could make a return no matter how powerful they are.
Without further ado, throughout the numerous quantity of games I have played, many characters from the far reaches of the galaxy to hundreds of years ago I believe would be great to make a comeback. Not that I'm saying that these characters have become under the deceased status or anything but if you haven't played the series, I suggest you move on to another portion of the blog unless you enjoy spoilers of course. I mean the whole series! There are some spoilers that I begin to talk abut which relate to different areas of the franchises. Sorry.
Enjoy!
Uncharted: Eddy Raja (Spoiler alert)
My most favourite character out of the Uncharted franchise who was introduced in the very first Uncharted and arrived with a whole sense of humour. If you see humour as being dark and making insults we can't fully understand. A character from Indonesia who has become the head of some of the most famous or should I say most infamous Pirate gangs around...
No! Not those ones.
These are the ones and whilst they might not be a very unique bunch from the Pirates prior to their existence, this isn't necessarily the reason I chose Eddy Raja to return. Aside from the fact that I loved playing as the character in the Uncharted 3 multiplayer which rose me up the ranks quickly with some crazy talk to and my fun was cut short when I made a new account and I was thrown off matches after a weird symbol of a wire stood before my eyes, it was really the reason that I believed there was potential in the character to which I could imagine him being a character in his own game.
However would he have actually survived his fate in Uncharted 3? Out of all the characters in the series that have faded away, I think Eddy represents the best chance although this chance is somewhat slim. He was bitten on the neck when falling down the pit and even if the mutant who pulled him in to the dark abyss below did break his fall, what would Eddy have to content with? Maybe he did find someway out. Maybe he became one of them! 0_0 Although even if he doesn't arrive back in his physical form aside from prequels (unless he's a new character in the next Uncharted), it would be interesting to see him in a dream sequence, maybe even a plot device in a way guiding (or just annoying) Drake through the game whenever he faints or something and I believe that's likely considering Drake's state lately. Although a prequel would b neat and I think if he did survive, that would make for a great story if they ever run in to the ladyship herself, Rika Raja who basically stole all the treasure... but is on the heroes team in multiplayer.
Jak and Daxter: Gol and Maia (Spoiler alert)
The Jak and Daxter series has been separated vastly by an Old and New World, spanning about 200 years which has formed the basis of a wacky time travelling storyline. In the Old World we saw the rise of Gold and Maia with the threats of dark eco taking over the world and their efforts were hindered when the planets two favourite heroes arrived on the scene... mostly out of the reason that Daxter wanted to be changed back in to a Human. Locked away in a dark eco silo after their Precursor Robot smashed to bits after the final battle and Samos was left wondering whether they would ever return... about 12 years later and still nothing. It would make sense that they weren't able to survive since dark eco has always remained one of the most illusive yet most dangerous of substances. Even whilst in the Dark Jak form, Jak would completely disintegrate in a pool of the liquid. So what would make Gol and Maia different? They may have possessed several of it's powers but they were unable to wield it like Jak.
However it's a possibility that remains. No one really knows where all the sites from the Old World are in the New World. When I was playing Jak 2, I found that from Dead Town, the journey should go North West in to the mountains yet the area is so different and in the original game, the journey was heading North although think I know why this has played about since Samos's Hut may not have been on that particular plate margin so it the land mass could moved. I apologise if you dislike Geography but maybe the dark eco silo could simply be where the palace stands today?
I think that Jak 3 may even have been intended to bring the characters back but scraped it for their potential Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier which could have caused our fellow heroes to travel back in time to the Old World. I mean the Metal Heads would want to check out what's in the silo eventually. Maybe they could make deals with the Metal Head Leader? If they did survive, they may not have been the same people they were before and may have even fused together to become... Metal Kor? I'm just thinking out loud.
What is clear though is that the mystery of Gold and Maia's status is the main reason why a majority of gamers don't wish for a reboot of any kind. A great world (or two) has been created from Jason Rubin and Andy Gavin and the return of Gol and Maia only furthers the possibility and loyalty towards a potential Jak 4. I do think there are many other stories waiting to be told but without Gol and Maia, I think Naughty Dog would have even sold the franchise in order for it to be continued as a reboot although possibly unlikely. They were thinking of rebooting the entire franchise. How could they? So in the meantime, I'll be waiting for this new game to be announced though I believe if it was released, it won't be the game we hoped for.
Ratchet and Clank: Chairman Drek and Angela Cross... and pretty much every other character in the series (Spoiler alert)
It has only been a year since I and many other people were anointed as a Ratchet and Clank fan and the series has long since progressed the with introduction of coop gameplay, more cartoonish attitudes (which isn't entirely a bad thing) and the release of very small games... which is kind of a bad thing. My adventure of the series though didn't exactly meet the demise of the sequel very quickly. This was a time when the internet was in it's earliest stages and if you missed on a game's release, that was it! So in 2007, after playing the other Ratchet and Clank games available at the time, I was able to buy Ratchet and Clank 2 which I always believed would bring back Chairman Drek as the next main villain again and the fact that the game was called Going Commando made me think that Ratchet and Clank would have to train hard to stop Drek from returning to power and that would be an interesting way to work around with the wealth he has to buy multiple gangs and superweapons... to which they would soon be smashed up by the two heroes. I know, haha but it would have been fun to see him return from a villain that was obsessed with alerting the whole galaxy about his motives to a more darker character... or just another guy who keeps alerting his plans to the entire galaxy which makes Ratchet and Clank's job much easier. Who knows, perhaps he could make his next appearance as a cyborg? I do have major doubts we'll ever see him in a future game of any kind especially since Insomniac Games don't really aim to bring back villains at least in major roles aside from Qwark and Nefarious and... Lawrence!
Even if he doesn't return for a game, the movie set for 2015 appears to be set around the series's routes so we could see Drek return sometime soon.
To say he is the only character I would like to see return in the future however would be wrong since there is also a whole bunch of characters I would like to see possibly in a new sub series. I have decided to pick on Angela Cross for this one since in my opinion, she is a symbol of a new storyline as we highlight the storyline of the Future series. She's a Lombax who was last heard in the Future series itself, flying away with with Mr. Apogee. I'm not suggesting any need for a fight between Angie and Talwyn but I would have much preferred the In to the Nexus story to head down the search for more answers rather than just bringing a new set of villains in to the action. There's still the mysteries of the events in Tools of Destruction that don't remain quite clear and since Angela is one of the last of the Lombax species, it would be cool to team up with her to find any other Lombaxes in the universe that could have been left behind. That's just in the event she doesn't go crazy and build her own Dimensionator.
Last but not least, there are the whole batch of characters out there who have only appeared for a few moments. We saw that with the Q-Force, all our favourite characters from the original game were brought in to what was developed in to a hub world which became the Starship Phoenix. They were very enjoyable characters and it was very fun to hear them discussing who flicked what button on the doomsday machine. It would only be fair to bring the other minor characters especially from the Bogon Galaxy this time round. We've only had 1 game set in the Bogon Galaxy. A cutscene at the beginning of Ratchet and Clank 3 doesn't count in this instance. Solana has had about 3 games including it's setting whilst Polaris, introduced only 6 years ago, has had various games so it would be great to bring back the Bogon galaxy and it's characters with it's own unique atmosphere including the guy obsessed with shiny crystals, Slim Cognito to offer us some sweet discounts on the most powerful weapons and the guy near the end of the game that we only spoke to for about five seconds. I must emphasise though that the characters in R&C3 were in this state in the original game. They could just as well be easily promoted in a new game and that would also make sense with the Angela Cross character.
Infamous: Kessler (Spoiler alert)
The ending of Infamous still continues to baffle many gaming minds around the globe and for that reason and the journey of the story, Kessler quickly became my favourite character of the franchise. the mysterious attitude and dark personality, believing in the idea that the ends justify the means and the ending itself only furthered the complex origin of the character with even more questions to be asked.
Many of you may think that Sasha and Alden Tate were the most likely to survive within the series which would be correct considering the comic book series that quickly followed after the announcement of the original game and even after the events of the Infamous 2 good ending, it's very possible that they may have survived to Infamous: Second Son. However despite the conclusive factors that the character is deceased, there is still much potential for future games to bring back this character which I don't believe was utilised very well. In the sequel, we got as much as mentions and a skin (which I use all the time when I play the game) but the story of his character was lost forever and only remaining more illusive. I believed that we would actually see more to the character in other forms. I mean, he wanted Cole to become more physically and mentally prepared. He could just as well as easily planted more tests should Cole arrive to New Marais. When watching the Infamous 2 trailer which I was spending most of the year on, I thought that the armed soldiers were in fact Kessler clones of some kind which would have been much more interesting as the man who had fallen in the previous game, would return in a way as a ghost in physical form... take that a few hundred ghosts.
Taking a ghost form in to consideration, why not have seen him as an actual ghost in some way. I mean, he is a conduit and electrical impulses is his speciality so he could easily control brain patterns. Maybe leave on a residue of the message at the end of the first game. What is more clear though, is the possibility of an Infamous prequel staring Kessler could wrap up a lot of loose ends especially when involving the subsequent paths he took and noted from the original timeline which would shape the current continuity.
Th final one I will list for today will be one which will make sense as to why I haven't mentioned this particular franchise. Saving the best until last of course. So we have it and the drums and rolling. The next character or characters in this case, is...
Assassin's Creed: Everyone! (No spoilers)
I know what you're thinking. There couldn't possibly be another Altair or Ezio game which is a sad thought since many of the characters have so much potential for spin-offs but what troubled me more was that especially within the Ezio trilogy, all the characters were built up to such interesting an unique characters from the historical ages but yet barely any were seen or even heard in Assassin's Creed: Revelations. We didn't get even as much as single epilogue. To what I can agree that there probably shouldn't be more Altair or Ezio games, that doesn't mean they can't get more screentime. I've always wondered what it would be like to see many Assassins all in one game and a game involving the many in Assassin's Creed 2 could do just that. You would have the Courtesans, the Thieves and the Mercenary leaders to play as with their own style of assassinating or even introduce a brand new faction like those from the multiplayer modes including Priest or even a set of treasure hunters. This would work even without Ezio and even if a game set again in the Third Crusade, would it really matter Altair was in the game, perhaps as an enemy?
There is also Connor who has only tad bit of games compared to Ezio and the fact that people didn't find him interesting was a shame since he wasn't necessarily meant to be character of interest in the same sense of Ezio. There was a different alignment of personalities and objectives which diverted Ezio fans away from the game and it seems like Ubisoft will decide to head towards a path that will aim to gain more popularity over the mainstream audience as shown by their plans to only go forward with series that will continue and gain the highest profit rather than smaller standalone series and it's clear to see that Edward Kenway was based on a bit of Ezio's personality and Connor's brutality... They didn't rule out Connor not returning though. they did mention that they would only create a sequel if he was popular but even in the event he doesn't have his own sequel, there's no reason why he couldn't be in future games. This is the Kenway trilogy and he may not even be the last of his namesake. Next year, there could even be a game where we could play as many Kenways from the ones we've seen so far to the ones that have yet to be announced, I doubt we've seen the last of the Kenways. Maybe soon to be in their very own party DLC. It is the same developer that made Raving Rabbids.
So that's my list finished and I know there's a whole bunch of other characters out there who are craving to make another return but another list of mine will wait until another time.
So what characters would you like to see return for the future? Bearing in mind, this doesn't matter if this character has been missing or scrambled, they can still return.
Thanks for reading! Hope you enjoyed.
